The Touhou Project (Japanese: 東方Project, Hepburn: Tōhō Purojekuto), also known simply as Touhou (東方, literally "Eastern" or "Oriental"), is a bullet hell shoot 'em up video game series created by one-man Japanese dōjin soft developer Team Shanghai Alice. Since 1995, the team's member, Jun'ya "ZUN" Ōta, has independently developed programming, graphics, writing, and music for the series, self-publishing 22 main titles as of August 2019. In addition to the games, ZUN has produced related print works and music albums, and collaborated with developer Twilight Frontier on six official spin-off Touhou fighting games.[1]

The Touhou Project is set in Gensokyo,[a] a land sealed from the outside world and primarily inhabited by humans and yōkai, legendary creatures from Japanese folklore that are depicted in the series as bishōjo in an anthropomorphic moe style. Reimu Hakurei, the miko of the Hakurei Shrine and the main character of the series, is often tasked with resolving supernatural "incidents" caused by other Gensokyo residents.

The first five titles were developed for the Japanese NEC PC-9800 computer series, with the first, Highly Responsive to Prayers, released in August 1997; the series' signature danmaku (弾幕, lit. 'bullet curtain') mechanics were introduced in the second game, Story of Eastern Wonderland (also 1997). The release of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil in August 2002 marked a shift to Microsoft Windows, bringing the series to a wider audience inside and outside of Japan. Numerous sequels followed, including several spin-offs departing from the traditional bullet hell format.

The Touhou Project has become particularly notable as a prominent source of Japanese dōjin content, with the series spawning a vast body of fan-made works such as artwork, music, print works, video games, and Internet memes. The popularity of the series and its derivative works has been attributed in part to the few restrictions placed by ZUN on the use of his content. Unofficial works are frequently sold at fan conventions, including Comiket, where the franchise has frequently held the record for circle participation, and the official convention Reitaisai, where trial versions of the official games are typically distributed prior to release.

As we all know, Touhou started it's franchise on the platform of PC-98, it's first game being a breakout game instead of a normal Vertical Danmaku Scrolling game.

First installment of the Series is Touhou 1: Highly Responsive to Prayers, in which our beloved shrine maiden, Reimu Hakurei, is introduced. The game was initially revealed in 1996 and released in 1997. In this game, Reimu uses her gohei to hit Yin-Yang balls in order to hit cards and bosses in order to complete levels.
Gameplay is similar to Arkanoid, a game by Taito, which later changes in the next installment and maintaining the same genre throughout the main game series. Unlike Arkanoid, the Yin-Yang balls ARE allowed to touch the bottom of the player's screen and continue moving.

And here's story time.

There's no story really. In all seriousness. But all we know something hit the Hakurei Shrine and Reimu won't let the culprit get away with it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next installment is Touhou 2: Story of Eastern Wonderland which has been launched in 1997, same year as the first installment (see above). Touhou 2 is the first installment to be in the Vertical Scrolling Danmaku genre.
Now instead of using a Yin-Yang ball, Reimu has two of those bad boys and now can also shoot bullets (FUCK YEAH). In the menu, you're allowed to choose between three shot types:

Wide range with weak power
Mid range with normal power and auto-target
Narrow range with great power and slow movement
Reimu also has bombs in which the player could use to clear bullets from the screen for duration of the bomb and granting bonus points. Use them wisely though.
Touhou 2 also reveals most features we know:

 Relatively small hitboxes
Bosses who are slightly bigger than the player
Power-up system
Point items
Extra Stage
The scoring system

In Touhou 2, Marisa Kirisame makes her first appearance, later accompanying Reimu as playable character.

Story time, for real though.
Reimu returns after some training and the Hakurei Shrine is filled with ghosts and youkai, so Reimu takes Genji, her servant, in order to find Rika, the culprit and defeat her. In the Extra Stage, she attacks once more.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up is Touhou 3: Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream, launched in 1997 as well. ZUN was really active. Anyway, this is the first game in the Phantasmagoria type, as people tend to call it. It features two sides on the player screen. The left side oftenly is the player's side, the right one being the opponent's one. How's it work? Simple. You have to dodge danmaku as usual, and also release charge attacks and use bombs on the opponent's side. You can refer this game style as simply split-screen.
The Story mode gameplay features 9 levels, each level progressing and the AI gets better and better. Imagine if someone would patch the AI to be mad shit insane, right? haha. ha.
Since it's a split screen game, you are also able to compete against a friend via local play, with the new Joypad support™️. Or if you just wanna shoot some footage (you never know), you could watch two AIs battle one against the other.

Is this the story time?????

Reimu runs across some ruins near the Hakurei Shrine who is said that those who enter and pass all the stages of the ruins get well rewarded. Guess who wins.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fourth installment is Touhou 4: Lotus Land Story, in which the Japanese name "Gensoukyou" reveals the world where all events occur. This one's launched in 1998, both the trial and final products.
In Touhou 4, now we also have Marisa as playable character. Reimu can cover wide areas but low damage, while Marisa does the opposite. Bombs show different behavior depending on character chosen.
Touhou 4 also reveals more of the features we know:

Grazing

Hold shift to move slower, helping with focusing on enemy bullets.
 Bombs auto-collect items now
Oh forgot, graze counter.

And to be more exact, Touhou 4 isn't actually where it is revealed where all the game events happen in. Touhou 5 does that (see below). Touhou 4 also returns to the normal Playstyle of Vertical Scrolling Danmaku that Touhou 2 had, this time with more bullet sauce and Marisa as playable character as mentioned.

Guess how many times did judg3 mistype in this post and eventually fixed it
Youkai start swarming the Hakurei Shrine, requiring for Reimu and Marisa head separate ways up to the Mugenkan, Yuuka Kazami's mansion and location of the last stages.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And finally, Touhou 5: Mystic Square, being the fifth and last installment on the PC-98 platform, which features Reimu, Marisa, Yuuka and Mima (pls come back) as playable characters, each with a single shot type.
This game features Alice Margatroid's first appearance, later appearing as Stage 3 mid-boss and boss of Touhou 7 and Ghost Side of Marisa in Touhou 8. Touhou 5 consists in Touhou 4's features mostly, but has a more lenient score ranking system.
As mentioned above, Touhou 5 reveals truly that all actions of the franchise occur in Gensokyo.

thank god it's almost over omg

Demons start coming out from a cave that was buried in mountains. The protagonists must go to Makai, reach the fortress of Pandemonium and defeat the mastermind.
