Khan was born on 2 November 1965 to a Muslim family in New Delhi. He spent the first five years of his life in Bangalore, where his maternal grandfather, Ifthikar Ahmed, worked as a chief engineer in the port in the 1960s.
Khan's paternal grandfather, Meer Jan Muhammad Khan, was a Pashtun (Pathan) of Peshawar descent.
